1997 Cadillac De Ville Harmonic Balancer Pulley wont come out?
I'm trying to remove the Harmonic Balacer Pulley on a Cadillac De Ville (4.6 North Star)This thing will not move. I've followed the Chiltons manual to the tee. I have the recommended Harmonic Puller and its attached as show in the Chiltons. I've broken an extension and a 1/2" drive socket trying to tighting the Harmonic Puller. The Harmonic Balancer started to come out but stopped midway. I don't know why it would do this. I NEED ALL THE HELP I CAN GET.
Some one was telling me to use an impact wrench to tighten the Harmonic Puller until the Pulley comes off. I shouldn't have to use a impact should I?
Never ever ever use an impact gun in a wheel puller of any kind.
If the balancer has started to move try soaking in a spray penetrating oil. Then remove the puller, re-install the retaining bolt and push the balancer back onto the crank. By putting it back into place you will break up the corrosion.
The allignment key may be rolling in its slot and causing a bind. Pushing the balancer back on with let it realign.
Once you have pushed it back on, start the removal again and it will come off much easier.
