what chain/sprocket do loggers use on husqvarna chainsaws (455 rancher)?
my dad had a husky model 50 which is pretty much the same as the rancher 455 which i have. he paid $100 extra to get a more aggressive chain which he had to also buy a different sprocket, he said it was the same as the loggers used but my question is can i have this set up on my 455 rancher and what do i need to buy. the chain that's on it is good for smaller stuff but it can't touch his model 50 with the bigger chain. the 455 rancher has the power but i think i will make a world of difference with a wider meatier chain. if you have this set up for your 455 rancher let me know how much of a diff it makes. also my cousin told me that stihl makes better chains could i get the better sprocket and fit a stihl chain on it. my dad said the bigger chain had diff spacing in the teeth that the sprocket bites but i couldn't find it on the internet
The problem you are having is with a thing called chain pitch. Chain pitch is the measurement between three rivets on the chain and dividing by 2. There are 4 common sizes, 1/4", .325", 3/8" and .404". The 1/4" in used on small saws and tends to be expensive because of the number of parts to cover a certain length. .325" chain is most likely what you have on the Rancher. Its used mostly in consumer and mid-range saws because it does not require as much power as the bigger chain does. 3/8" chain has two sizes, the regular and the low profile. Low profile is what you see on the small entry level saws. The regular 3/8" chain is most likely what your dad has on his saw. Its used on heavy applications, where the saw has moe power. The .404" chain is used on the big saws over 30" and most likely you won't see this chain.
Next you mentioned the cutter tooth. There are 2 basic designs the semi-chisel and the full chisel. The best way to explain it is to see the link I am posting, it shows the difference in the shape of the teeth. http://www.arboristsite.com/chainsaw/158648-4.htm
Semi chisel is good for dirty wood and good in most wood. The full chisel has minimum cutting friction for a smooth cut in hard or frozen wood.
Stihl is the only saw manufacturer that makes their own saw chain.
